The Battle of Shiloh
...one of the bloodiest battles of the Civil War

 William T. Sherman

Grant

Born Hiram Ulysses Grant in Ohio but through confusion at West Point he became Ulysses Simpson Grant. Appointed to the military academy, he found it distasteful and hoped that Congress would abolish the institution, freeing him. He excelled only in horsemanship for that he had displayed a capability early in life and graduated in 1843, 2lst out of 39 graduates. His return to civilian life proved unsuccessful. Farming on his father-inlaw's land was a failure, as was the real estate business and attempts to gain engineering and clerk posts in St. Louis. He finally became a clerk in a family leather goods store in Galena, which was run by his two younger brothers.

Beaureguard

The services of "The Hero of Fort Sumter," Pierre G.T. Beauregard, were not utilized to their fullest due to bad blood between the Confederate general and Jefferson Davis. The native Louisianan had graduated second in the 1838 class at West Point. There he had become a great admirer of Napoleon and was nicknamed "The Little Napoleon." As a staff officer with Winfield Scott in Mexico he won two brevets and was wounded at both Churubusco and Chapultepec. In 1861 he served the shortest term ever-January 23-28 as superintendent at West Point. Southern leanings probably resulted in his prompt removal. On February 20, 1861, he resigned his captaincy in the engineers and offered his services to the South.

Sherman

Sherman was born on May 8, 1820, in Lancaster, Ohio, and educated at the U.S. Military Academy. After an undistinguished military career he resigned from the army in 1853 to become a partner in a banking firm in San Francisco. He was president of a military college in Alexandria, La. (now Louisiana State University) from 1859 to the beginning of 1861, when Louisiana seceded from the Union. At the outbreak of the Civil War in 1861, he offered his services to the Union army and was put in command of a volunteer infantry regiment, becoming a brigadier general of volunteers after the first Battle of Bull Run. Only five cadets of the class of 1840 graduated ahead of him, and he was appointed to the artillery. He received a brevet for his services in California during the Mexican War but resigned in 1853 as a captain and commissary officer.

Johnston

At the beginning of the Civil War it was almost universally agreed that the finest soldier, North or South, was Albert Sidney Johnston. But his Civil War career was a definite disappointment to the Confederacy. The Kentucky-born Johnston was appointed to West Point from Louisiana and graduated eighth in the class of 1826.

Battle of Shiloh
through the eyes of  Brigadier-General Benjamin M. Prentiss, 1862

Meaning in Hebrew Place of Peace, the small area around a tiny church at Shiloh yielded to this point in the History of the United States one of the most costly and tragic battles ever. The name was ironic, in that the dead at Shiloh amounted to more Americans dead in every war and battle in U.S. history combined to that point.

Confederate Losses   Union Losses
Killed 1,723 Killed 1,754
Wounded 8,012 Wounded 8,408

During the winter of 1861-62 Federal forces pushing southward from St. Louis captured Forts Henry and Donelson on the Tennessee and Cumberland rivers. This action forced Gen. Johnston to abandon southern Kentucky and much of West and Middle Tennessee. After withdrawing further south, he established a new line covering the Memphis and Charleston Railroad, the only all-weather link between Richmond and Memphis. Realizing that he could not wait for another Federal advance, Johnston began concentrating forces at Corinth, Mississippi, where he hoped to take the offensive and destroy General Grant's Army of the Tennessee before it could be joined by General Don Carlos Buell's Army of the Ohio.

On April 2, 1862, Johnston began his march from Corinth.  Because of the lack of marching experience, the march took much longer than expected.

Meanwhile, at the Union camp at Shiloh, the Federals troops spent a day drilling and merry-making. Hundreds went for a swim in Owl Creek. Others rested. There was also a good deal of diarrhea, which the boys labelled the "Tennessee quick step".shilohmap.gif (324205 bytes)

On the morning of April 3,1862 the Confederate commander Albert Sidney Johnston ordered the Army of Mississippi 43,968 strong to march to Pittsburg Landing or Shiloh which was approximately 20 miles away. Johnston had hoped to attack Grant and his Army of Tennessee,47,000 strong before Gen. Buell reinforced Grant with 17,000 and Lew Wallace with 6,000 Gen. Johnston expected to begin battle at light on the 5th, but because of rains and bad roads it was postponed to the 6th. At 4:55 a.m., Sunday, the battle began when a reconnoitering party of Prentiss' Union division encountered Hardee's skirmish line.

Grant wired his superior General H.W. Halleck. "I have scarecely the faintest idea of attack." Halleck told Grant to "sit tight at Shiloh and wait for Buell to arrive." William Tecupseh Sherman, division commander, was quoted saying to reporters, "Take your regiment to Ohio. No enemy is nearer than Corinth." Little did he know that the night of April 5, the huge and powerful Army of the Mississippi was poised to strike just out of sight of the Union camp. P.G.T. Beaureguard, second in command of the Confederates, felt they had lost the element of suprise because of some shots fired by the men in front. Beaureguard pleaded with Johnston to postpone the attack. "I would fight them if they were a million," Johnston said.

On the morning of April 6, Johnston told his fellow officers "Tonight we will water our horses in the Tennessee." When Johnston's powerful Army of the Mississippi hit the federal camps, they had achived complete suprise. The attack pushed most Union divisions back to reform elsewhere. Others fought doggedly to hold their line.

Once the attack started, there was mass confusion on both sides. Most of the boys had never been in battle before, and did not know there orders. "It was a murderous fist fight."

The Rebels rolled over one Union position after another. Then, amongst the confusion along a sunken road, the federals finally established and held a line that stopped the southern advance. The division consisted of Illinois and Iowa farm boys mostly, under the command of General Prentiss. Grant's orders were to "Hold the sunken road at all costs." Prentiss greatly understood the seriousness of Grant's orders. Bullets buzzed through the saplings around the area, and it appeared and sounded like a hornet's nest. The Confederates named the place "Hornets' Nest" because of the stinging shot and shell they had to encounter there. The Confederate infantry launched eleven attacks on the Hornet's nest. The Union line wavered and bent, but would not break. The Confederate artillery lined up sixty-two cannons at point blank range and fired on the sunken road. It was the largest number of cannons ever used at that time in a war effort. Under protection of the cannons the Rebel troops were able to move in and take the sunken road. The Union troops were forced to surrender. They had fought well holding the Confederates for six hours. For years to come Union veterans were proud to say, " I fought with Prentiss at the Hornet's Nest."

There was also a great deal of fighting at a peach orchard, just yards away from the Hornet's Nest. The peach trees were in full bloom. Many soldiers lay dead. Peach blossoms covered the dead like a fresh-fallen snow. Gen. Johnston led the last raid on the peach orchard. As Johnston sat on his horse watching the lines reform, a ball from the gun of an unknown Union soldier struck the Southern commander, severing the large artery in his right leg.  His aid took him to a nearby tree. He was shot in the back of the leg. He bled to death. He could have easily been saved with a touniquet, but he had sent his surgeon off to care for Union prisoners. No surgeon being near by, he died of loss of blood at 2:30 p.m.  The death of the General caused a lull in the battle at the right flank for about an hour. The situation was somewhat relieved by the fact that a second in command was on the field. Gen. Pierre G.T. Beauregard was in charge of headquarters which was near at Shiloh Church. When he was informed of Johnston's death, he assumed command. He sent Gen. Bragg to right of the field and Gen. Daniel Ruggles in command at the center. Gen. Ruggles having witnessed 11 unsuccessful charges ordered a line of 62 pieces to bombard the Union line.He came out with his clothes tattered from bullets that had grazed him, and his boot sole was shot.

That night dead lay everywhere. Neither army had developed a system for gathering the dead General Grant said a peson can walk in any given direction without stepping on ground." In a Confederate camp that night one soldier said, "You can hear the screams of the injured. They screamed for water, God heard them for the heavens opened and the rain fell." Flashes of lightening showed vultures feeding on the ungathered dead.

Pierre G.T. Beauregard sent Gen. Bragg to right of the field and Gen. Daniel Ruggles in command at the center. Gen. Ruggles having witnessed 11 unsuccessful charges ordered a line of 62 pieces to bombard the Union line. The Confederate troops seeing the bombardment attacked with new energy and courage. The Union soldiers on the left and right routed toward the Landing leaving Prentiss and W.H.L. Wallace isolated in the Hornet's Nest. The Confederates then circled around Wallace and Prentiss which who was under fire. Wallace seeing this gave the order to withdraw. To do this they had to pass threw a ravine which was already under the cross fire of the encircling Rebels. Wallace was mortally wounded but 2 of his regiments passed through the valley. Prentiss held out till about 5:30 and then surrendered with 2,200 troops-all that remained of the 2 divisions. The next day Union troops{20,000 strong}, from Generals Lew Wallace and Buell reinforced Grant. On the night of April 6, the long-awaited arrival of Don Carlos Buell's reinforcements arrived. Through the cover of gunboat fire, his troops came in on steamboats. The gun boats fired on fifteen minute intervals, allowing Buell's forces to come aground, and robbing the Confederates of their greatly needed rest.

Born Marietta, Ohio, Mar. 23, 1818,
Died. Nov. 19, 1898,
Don Carlos Buell

Buell graduated in 1841 from West Point, and soon after served in the Mexican War. Promoted to brigadier general at the start of the Civil War, he was given command of the Army of the Ohio in November of 1861. Buell supported Ulysses S. Grant's invasion of Tennessee by seizing Nashville on February 2nd 1862, and he supplied vital reenforcement to Grant at the Battle of Shiloh on April 6-7 1862. In September 1862 he marched north into Kentucky to oppose a Confederate offensive led by Braxton Bragg. After a fierce, but inconclusive, battle at Perryville on October 8, Buell was criticized for allowing the Confederates to escape and relieved of command on October 24th.

That morning the Confederates were pushed back on the ground that they had fought so hard to win the day before. With the fresh troops, the weary Rebels had little chance to win a complete victory. The Southerners were forced to march back to Corinth.

The final number of dead or missing was 13,000 on the Union side and 10,500 on the Confederate side.

Shiloh was a decisive battle in the war. The South needed a win to make up for land lost in Kentucky and Ohio. It also needed to save the Mississippi Valley. Memphis and Vicksburg were now vulnerable to Union attack, and after Corinth there is now doubt that those cities would be the next targets.

[Ed. Note: The original of this map was made immediately after the battle from surveys and information obtained by Chief of Topographical Engineers George Thom (of Halleck's staff) and his assistants, while the troops were still encamped on, and near, the battlefield. The positions of the troops were indicated in accordance with information at the time by Generals Grant, Buell, and Sherman.

The Confederates moved to the attack in three lines of battle: (1.) Hardee's three brigades and Gladden's brigade of Bragg's Corps forming the advance line, reaching from Sherman's right to beyond Prentiss's left; (2.) Bragg's remaining five brigades about eight hundred yards in rear of Hardee's line and bearing off more to the right, as far as Stuart; (3.) Polk's four brigades and Breckenridges three brigades disposed left and right as reserves, -- Polk's first to be drawn upon.

Hardee's line carried the first Federal position, and with the assistance of Bragg's line, fought the Federals back nearly a mile, where, at 10:30 o:clock, the Federal line extended, in general, from what is indicated as McCook's position on the morning of the second day, across to what was Sherman's position the morning of the second day. The Federal line was maintained until after four o:clock in the afternoon. Attacking that line, Polk's brigades were, for the most part, on the right of Hardee, who was then commanding the Confederate left; Bragg directed the attack on Polk's right; and two of Breckenridge's three brigades were in the main hotly engaged on the Confederate right.

Toward evening the Confederates were arrayed opposite the Federal line, as indicated for the evening of April 6.

The center of the left on the middle line of defence (which was held from 10:30 till after four o:clock) was called by the Confederates "The Hornets' Nest." It was, approxiametely, the ground indicated as having been held by McCook on the morning of April 7; on April 6 it was defended by Prentiss, assisted on his right by W.H.L. Wallace, and on his left by Hurlbut. Prentiss was not far from the Hornet's Nest when he was captured.

General Johnston was killed at 2:30, Sunday afternoon, on ground indicated as having been held by Crittenden on the morning of April 7.]
